Pragmatic, realistic and no-nonsense describe Ruffer Johnson.
After receiving a Masters Degree in Social Work Ruffer joined the faculty of Tuskegee Institute in 1970. He remained a member of the Faculty until retiring in 2006.
In 1969, Tuskegee acquired a federal grant of $40,000 which enabled them to develop Tuskegee's new undergraduate program in social work. In 1970, Ruffer was recruited by Ray McNair to join Tuskegee as an instructor in the newly formed Department of Social Work. In 1971, accreditation activities were initiated. In 1975, Tuskegee program met the requirements under the Council of Social Work Education (CSWE) and received national accreditation status. Ruffer, along with a team which included Ray McNair as department chair, were instrumental in the formation of one of the nation's earliest undergraduate programs in social work. Later, Ruffer and other members of the faculty helped other undergraduate programs in Alabama become accredited.

How much fun it is to read about Sterling NY, the town I visited as a child with my famliy. My grandfather was Hugh B Dugan and my father was Hugh Carlyle Dugan and my brother is Sloane Dugan. So many famliy names! Such fun we had hopping in Grandpa Dugan’s old car where we could peek through the floor boards and see the ground on our way to to Uncle Allen and Aunt Francis’s farm. Good stuff for a little “city girl” living in Nutley NJ.Thanks for such fond memories,Susan Dugan Burgermaster
